The work
I started in legal operations in 1983 and spent six years inside law firms before moving to the consulting side. Since then I have designed and run outsourcing selections, managed software builds for financial institutions, and provided independent validation and verification of enterprise systems for New York State and New York City agencies.
I am a PMP-credentialed project manager, trained in traditional and agile methods. Clients call me the Software Whisperer because I translate between business owners and technology teams without losing anything in between.
Today I also build working AI agents and automation, and I run AI governance programs through my role as Director of Operations at Cognify Solutions. I coined the term AI Stewardship for the discipline of running AI responsibly inside a business, and AI Steward is the job I do.
The writing
I trained as a journalist at Emerson College and have never stopped writing. I am the author of several books, including bestsellers, and I publish a weekly newsletter on Substack about running AI with hygiene, governance and stewardship. I co-host the True Journalism podcast.
Outside the office
My wife Maggie and I co-founded the Autism Innovation Community Foundation, inspired by our daughter. I chair the board of trustees at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New York City. My faith is the foundation of how I do business: say what you will do, do it, and leave people better than you found them.
